Helping Servant Leaders Articulate Their Strengths

As recruiters, building connections with servant-hearted leaders can be a rewarding experience. If you’re working with professionals who lead with humility, it’s helpful to understand how they approach career conversations. Many of these leaders focus on service and impact rather than personal recognition, which can make them hesitant to highlight their own accomplishments.

Instead of directly showcasing their achievements, they often expect their work to speak for itself. While their contributions are meaningful, they may not always present them in a way that stands out in a hiring conversation. That’s where a little guidance can go a long way.

A great way to help is by encouraging them to think through three key areas and shape their responses into short, clear statements (just 1-2 sentences each):

  • Feature – What specific skill or expertise makes their work stand out?

  • Accomplishment – What’s a great example of the impact they’ve made?

  • Benefit – How does this add value for a future employer?

Helping servant leaders frame their experiences this way allows them to stay true to their values while making sure their strengths come across clearly. With a little practice, they can approach job interviews with more confidence and clarity.

Role-playing these conversations can be a great way to build confidence and get comfortable sharing strengths in a natural, meaningful way.

Our CEO, Bill McGuckin, is available on Thursdays from 7–9:30 AM CT for direct and deliberate role-playing sessions with partners. He warmly welcomes you to schedule a time here if it would be useful. If you know a leader who would benefit from speaking with us or learning about our mission-focused recruitment practice, please share our info: info@oxenhamgroup.com.
